Ownership
Our collection is an eclectic mix gathered from around the globe. We have made it available in its current form for research and educational purposes only. The Maritime Archive does not keep any original or physical copies, it being a digital archive only. We endeavour to acknowledge the source of every item used.
Photographs
In general it is unusual for an objection to be raised when photographs are used for educational or research purposes. Photographs from the archive may not be used for any commercial purpose without the approval of the copyright owner. It is the responsibility of anyone wishing to use any material from this site for commercial purposes, to establish the copyright position BEFORE using it. The Maritime Archive is not able to assist in this respect.
Checking Copyright Ownership
The team attempts to obtain the consent of copyright holders to use their material. For a large percentage of the photographs in the collection there is no information available to identify the copyright owner. Where names are available, a thorough search is made using telephone directories, online enquiries, photographic copyright directories, People Search and Search Engines such as Google. If these methods fail, we believe we have explored all reasonable avenues.
The consensus of opinion is that if any two of the following situations apply we would be deemed to have taken sufficient action to avoid infringing copyright laws:
1. If offence is caused, the material will be removed from the online collection
2. Reasonable efforts have been made to contact the copyright holder, but to no avail
3. No financial gain is to be made in relation to the collection
4. Our archive is only to be used for research or educational purposes
5. Where possible written permission is obtained from the current owner of any material used
