Places Of Interest

Lundy Island

Lundy is the largest island in the Bristol Channel, with a length of 5km (3.1m), and a population of 28 (as of 2007). It lies 19.3km (12m) off the coast of Devon, England, in the district of Torridge, about a third of the distance across the channel from Devon, England to South Wales. The Island of Lundy, can be difficult to visit, but is well worth the effort.

For divers there's the prospect of 137 wrecks around it's coast!

From a seafarers' perspective, this region presents itself as one of the most inhospitable stretches of cliffs and headlands imaginable. An area that by definition also extends 30 miles offshore, here there are at least 720 lost vessels.

The islands pristine waters are a sanctuary to some of the best examples of UK marine life, which earned Lundy the distinction of being the first marine reserve in the UK.

Take a look at our Instagram Account. [button at the bottom of this page] We have decided to dedicate this as a gallery for wreck drawings, created by award winning Welsh Artist and Diver 'dp'.

Each month, we shall add one of these fascinating sketches to the collection.

With decades of experience, 'dp' brings a unique perspective to this type of imagery. There will of course be a database entry to accompany each illustration.

Our wreck for August is the MAINE, a WWI casualty, Torpedoed by German submarine UC-17, off the South Devon coast.
